Alpaca Trekking
Yes, you read that right! If you love the outdoors and animals, the Alpaca Trekking with Bearhouse Alpacas is a fantastically different experience for you. The working alpaca farm is not far from the seaside resort of Sidmouth and is situated in an area of outstanding beauty.
However, there are not just alpacas the farm is host to! You can find many other animals such as angora goats, horses, ducks and geese, so there’s lots to see on your visit to the farm. The experienced staff will tell you everything you need to know about alpacas, including of course their amazing fluffy fleeces.
The team at the farm will take you on an alpaca trek around the tracks and bridleways near to the farm and you’ll be allowed to handle these beautiful animals.
Just a short 10 minute drive away, there’s no reason not to go!
The Donkey Sanctuary
Another one for the animal lovers! You may be surprised to learn that donkeys are in a major crisis across the world, so this is where The Donkey Sanctuary comes in.
Based near to Sidmouth, the registered charity provides sanctuary to suffering donkeys and mules from around the globe.
You’ll be able to see the amazing work the charity carries out free of charge, however, it is advisable that you be respectful of their privacy when required, as some of these animals are still recovering from their previous homes.
Dogs are more than welcome at the sanctuary as long as they are on a lead. The donkeys are the sanctuary arrive for a number of reasons such as health reasons, companionship, or if the owners’ circumstances have changed.
Gifts and meals are also available and will help support the sanctuary.
Burrow Farm Gardens
Burrow Farm Gardens is just shy of 10 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and have been created from scratch over the last 50 years.
Owner Mary Benger has tamed the garden over the years and created a space of pure botanical beauty. The gardens are perfect for anyone wanting to enjoy a peaceful day out, from fascinating woodland gardens to adventurous Pergold walkways, the gardens are simply breathtaking. The gardens have continued to expand over years with new features being added regularly!
The gardens are dog-friendly, however animals must be kept on a lead at all times. Don’t forget to check out the nursery while you’re there and buy some beautiful plants to spruce up your residential home! The quaint tea room offers a selection of cakes and cream teas to enjoy whilst you are visiting too.
Beer Quarry Caves
Without the Beer Quarry Caves, we wouldn’t have Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle and The Tower of London. Without this location and the links it created, these historic buildings just wouldn’t exist!
You’ll be able to visit the entire site and see the beautiful stone which the buildings listed above were created of. With years of tunneling, the quarry has now become a series of amazing underground caves.
You’ll be led through the tunnel by an expert who knows all about the tunnels and their history. From the Romans through to the Normans, you’ll be able to see each excavation technique and it will feel like you’re walking back in time…
